Dear New America School-Las Cruces,

Last week, an Executive Order was made that impacted federal immigration enforcement policies in our country. We know this may have caused concern for our families.  We are monitoring the situation and are in communication with our attorney for guidance.

All students, regardless of their immigration status, is welcome at NAS-LC.  Children in New Mexico are entitled to a free public education.

NAS-LC does not collect the immigration status of students or their family members. If we are asked for this information, we do not have it.

NAS-LC will not contact any agencies to provide immigration status.  We are not responsible for enforcing federal immigration law.

To receive more information, it is important that the school has your correct contact numbers on file. The School sends out texts with information.

NAS has a social worker on campus to meet with students if they feel nervous or stressed about the change to the nation’s policies.

Our students’ mental health and safety is our number one priority.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you would like to read more on this topic, New Mexico Attorney General’s office released this document: Ensuring a Safe and Secure Learning Environment for All: Guidance to Assist New Mexico’s K-12 Schools in Response to Immigration Issues.

Respectfully,

Margarita Porter, Superintendent/Principal
